A Website Audit is Necessary and Can Provide A Lot of Insight For Your Business
Companies have audits at certain intervals. Employees get evaluated from time to time as a performance indicator. That’s a given.
But more often than not, people tend to neglect that a website evaluation can also be seen as a type of performance indicator for your business, especially if it’s an online business. One way to look at it is to think of your site as a house that is always accepting visitors. Since you have a constant flow of visitors, you want to make sure it looks nice and clean. These days almost every business has a website- it’s like your virtual calling card to the world. When someone mentions their business or that they’re looking for a way to promote themselves, find a job, etc. I always ask if they have a website and are they on social media?
Now I’m not saying you need to spend several thousands of dollars and get a brand new site design in order to clean up your site.
Far from it.
There may be little tweaks you need to implement such as what to have on your navigation menu or inserting a few more internal links on your site.
Here are some reasons why you should have a website audit.
- To see if it is still inline with your brand’s vision. When I had first started my blog back in 2012, I claimed that it was about personal finance, but when it really wasn’t. Not only that, I didn’t have a specific goal in mind as other blogs did such as getting rid of student debt or retiring by 40. This is fine if you’re just starting to blog or only want to keep it as a hobby, but if you want to use it for your business, you want to make sure the content relates to your vision.
- The same goes for your social media profiles. Does the company bio relate to what the business is about? Is the bio the same on all social media platforms?
- To receive honest feedback from people who visit your site. Remember, it is about the customer and how they view your business. Their perspective might not necessarily be the same as yours and they may be able to point out things you have never noticed. This in turn will help improve the user/visitor experience on your site and increase the potential for repeat visitors.
Companies are always concerned about the customer service and are looking for ways to improve it.. They’re constantly asking you to complete a quick survey in order to possibly win a gift card. While this is a great way to get feedback about the customer service, I think companies should ask more questions about the site user experience, ie ease of navigation, is the site mobile-friendly?
